Aging in Place in Morristown, With the Owner's Consent in Hand
Most Morristown households rent, so the first step for a grab bar, a ramp or a stairlift is often the owner's written consent, and we tell you what that letter needs to cover. Only 36.7 percent of homes in the Town of Morristown are owner-occupied, and almost one in four was built in 1939 or earlier.

Renting in Morristown? Consent comes before the quote
This page covers the Town of Morristown, not the separate Morris Township that surrounds it. They have different construction offices, and the Morris County Division on Aging on West Hanover Avenue is in the Township. In the Town only about a quarter of homes are single-family detached, so three homes in four are apartments or attached, and any permanent change starts with whoever owns the building. Get the landlord's or the association's approval in writing. NJ FamilyCare's home modification benefit, which can fund up to $15,000 of ramps, grab bars and bathroom work over a lifetime, itself requires the owner's written approval for a home the member does not own. For lifts, Morristown contracts its elevator subcode review to a private agency, so call the construction office to learn which agency and what it charges before comparing installer timelines. The buildings are old, too: 23.5 percent predate 1940, which is a reason to have any stair or doorway measured before a product is chosen.
Renting, or does an association own the outside?
Tell us who owns the building. We will say what the consent letter should cover so the contractor can price real work.
